Doja Cat Speaks About Her New Album and Its Pop Base
Doja Cat is gearing up to make waves with her upcoming album, “Vie.” It will come this fall. The Grammy-winning artist recently graced the cover of V Magazine, further fueling anticipation for the project.
In a candid conversation, Doja Cat opened up about her creative process and the direction she’s taking with “Vie.” Especially after her previous comments about the pressures of crafting “palatable, marketable, and sellable” music. All the insights she shared in her 2023 V Magazine cover story.
So, this time around, she acknowledges that her new album is “pop-driven.” Yet with her signature twist. “I do want to be self-aware enough to admit the fact that this is a pop-driven project,” Doja said. “Pop is just that—popular. It’s viewed almost like a sport by some people—enjoyed but often misunderstood, even by those who don’t truly respect it.” But for Doja, it’s about something more. It shows the unapologetic celebration of the genre and its ability to transcend expectations.
While Vie is undoubtedly leaning into pop, Doja’s versatility remains evident. V notes that rapping is still an integral part of the album. It shows Doja Cat exploring themes of love, romance, and intimacy throughout. “The concept is very much focused on love, romance, and sex — and the discourse around relationships,” she shared. “It’s about how I want my relationships to look in the future, my hopes for them.”

Doja Cat and Her Reflections on New Album
Doja’s reflections on modern relationships offer a refreshing contrast to the casual, often shallow depictions of romance. “I think the way people talk about love has become a bit more vapid. It doesn’t feel real, or loving, or romantic anymore,” she added. Vie aims to recapture that sense of longing and authenticity. Thus, it will tap into her own hopes for a deeper connection in the future.
Even with high expectations for Vie, Doja is determined not to get caught up in the pursuit of success at all costs. She’s committed to embracing the unknowns of the journey. She chooses to focus on the music rather than the numbers.
With this mindset, Doja embraces the possibility that Vie may not perform as well as her previous releases. Surprisingly, that’s perfectly fine with her. “If the project doesn’t do as well as the last one, I want to embrace that,” she concluded. “I want to focus on the process, not just the outcome.”
Fans have yet to get a taste of Vie, but Doja has kept the momentum going with recent high-profile collaborations, including her feature on the F1 soundtrack alongside Don Toliver for “Lose My Mind,” and a guest spot on Lizzo’s rap-heavy “STILL CAN’T FUH.”
Doja Cat’s previous album, Scarlet (2023), debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard 200, proving she continues to reign as one of pop’s most dynamic voices. With Vie set to drop this fall, it’s clear that the artist is ready to push the boundaries of her craft once again.
